Kyotanabe City in Kyoto Prefecture is one of the leading producers of gyokuro tea in Japan. 
The area has produced many winners for the gyokuro category at the National Tea Competition, which determines the best tea in Japan. 

Gyokuro from Kyotanabe City is the result of the skills of tea growers like master tea grower Juichi Yamashita, who practice careful tea garden and fertilization management. 
Through fertilization management with a focus on organic fertilizers, the right soil conditions are created for gyokuro tea. 
Then, by paying attention to each leaf of the tea plants day-by-day, the plants are given additional fertilizer as needed.  

When new spouts emerge in the spring, the tea garden is covered with straw or shaded with cheesecloth for about 40 days, 
thus shielding the sprouts from sunlight and allowing nutrients to be absorbed into every corner of the leaves, resulting in a high concentration of natural flavors. 
This process results in a unique Kyotanabe gyokuro that has less tannins (the astringent component found in tea) and more theanine, which gives tea its sweetness and umami.  

Kyotanabe Gyokuro has received acclaim both in Japan and internationally, including having received a gold medal at the Japanese Tea Selection Paris tea contest in 2022. 
With leaves handpicked one-by-one, the resulting tea is said to be a work of art, characterized by umami and sweetness that makes it hard to believe it is tea. 
In addition to traditional brewing methods using hot water, this tea can also be enjoyed after being cold brewed.
